A beautiful and compassionate masterpiece.

Tanya’s Score: Great*

Rated: 14A

Starring: Black Widow; Kylo Ren; Hawkeye Pierce; the beautiful and talented Laura Dern

Plot: A couple (Scarlett Johansson; Adam Driver) struggles to divorce amicably for the sake of their son (Azhy Robertson) as well as their mutual respect for one another.

Tanya’s Verdict: What I found so amazing about this movie was that as a viewer I had equal amounts of compassion and sympathy for both the wife and the husband throughout and not once did I feel emotionally manipulated. Nor did I feel that anything within this movie was contrived.

The acting is amazing; the story (no matter how ordinary seeming) is riveting and frankly I could watch Laura Dern all day long. Each actor shone in their respective role and elevated everyone around them. And I loved the music.

There is a real Woody Allen feel about how this movie unfolds, how the scenes are filmed, how the characters relate to one another. And it doesn’t hurt that it includes Alan Alda. All it’s missing is the humour.

I thought Marriage Story was incredibly sad. It made me think about the losses gained from divorce – not only as a spouse but also as a parent. Yet there’s a sense of hope permeating throughout it all.
