Interesting, quirky and entertaining.

Tanya’s Score: Good-and-a-half*

Rated: 14A

Starring: an uncreepy Tilda; a squeaky Jake; a measured Paul; Gus Fring

Plot: This movie centres around the kidnapping and exploitation of a beautiful beast named Okja and the unstoppable young girl (Seo-hyun Ahn) who will do anything to save her.

Tanya’s Verdict: This movie is a unique one that throws off quirky vibes similar to that of Downsizing and has some unforeseen twists and turns kind of like Parasite (it’s made by the same director). The plot untwists in such unconventional and sometimes erratic ways – that it’s difficult to pinpoint what Okja is actually about.

Without giving too much away, it focusses on the ethics of animal farming and GM foods while seemingly detailing the love a young girl feels for her beloved pet Okja.

There’s a bit of swearing and some mild scenes of animal cruelty – but otherwise I think this is a good one for the kids. It’s not only enjoyable and fantastical to watch – but it poses some ethical dilemmas for the kids to wrap their impressionable little minds around.

Currently streaming on Netflix, I highly recommend Okja.
